These stencils are compatible with hoppers and gondolas used on the Virginian Railway between 1941 and 1959. Cars stenciled with these decals need not have worn Virginian livery, they simply had to have passed thorough one of these yard locations and been serviced. Of the specific yard locations, regular car inspections were performed at Sewells Point, VA (SP), Victoria, VA (VIC), Roanoke, VA (RKE), Princeton, WV (PTN), and Elmore, WV (EL). A small car-inspection force worked as needed at Page, WV (PG) to service hoppers to and from the mines and coke ovens (most notably Beards Fork, Page, Johnson Branch, Carlisle and Summerlee, as well as interchange traffic via C&O and NYC through Deep Water and C&O through Oak Hill) on the Deep Water leg of the “West End“ of the Virginian.

The dates on the decals are all weekdays. However, during World War II, when West Virginia coal went to war, it rode in Virginian hoppers and when the Virginian went to war, as with other critical industries, it worked around the clock 365 days a year until victory was won.

This decal is a partial substitution for Model Railroad Services' set MRS 280-02.

This project would never have happened without the support of Robert Lee Moore, of Charleston, WV.
